Academic Symposium Accompanying the "Grand
Exhibition of Cultural Relics Collected over the Last 50 Years"
at the Palace Museum
From 8 October 1999 to 8 January 2000, the Palace Museum presented the exhibition "Grand Exhibition of Cultural Relics Collected over the Last 50 Years." The exhibition was divided into two sections: ancient calligraphy and painting in the corridor west of the Bao He Dian (only until 17 November); and ancient objects in the Feng Xian Dian. This event was organized to showcase a selection of 400 of the more than 24,000 objects acquired by the Palace Museum since 1949. On 25 October, the Palace Museum invited experts in the field to gather for a symposium, with Vice-Director Yang Xin presiding. Participants included Wai-kam Ho (Nelson-Atkins Museum), Wu Hung (Uiversity of Chicago), Joseph Chang (Freer Gallery/Sackler Museum of Art), Chen Xiejun (Shanghai Museum), Wang Qingzheng (Shanghai Museum), Shan Guolin (Shanghai Museum), Fu Xinian (China Engineering Institute), Jin Weinuo (China Central Academy of Fine Art), Xue Yongnian (China Central Academy of Fine Art), Yin Jinan (China Central Academy of Fine Art), Luo Shiping (China Central Academy of Fine Art), Wang Shiqing (China Education and Science Institute), Gu Sen (Chinese Academy of Arts), Zhao Lizhong (Chinese Painting Institute), Zhang Chen (Chinese Painting Institute). From the Palace Museum, Zhu Jiajin, Nie Chongzheng, Xu Zhongling, Pan Shenliang, and Yu Hui, et al, attended. These experts gave full approval of the work involved in amassing the collection and subjected the works of painting and calligraphy displayed to a high level of appraisal. In addition, participants also brought up various suggestions towards possible future developments in the areas of collection and publication. A concurrent symposium focusing on the ancient objects convened at
a separate location.
