The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York recently held a symposium
on issues surrounding the authenticity of Dong Yuan's Riverbank.
Prior to this, mainland Chinese scholars conducted a similar discussion
on Zhang Xian's Ten Odes. Yang Renkai, returning from New York,
says that Riverbank is a "Song painting." In truth, we find
ourselves at a critical point in resolving the criteria for authenticating
Song and Five Dynasties painting.
Forty works of calligraphy and painting from the palace of Puyi, the
last emperor of the Qing dynasty, appeared in the auction market during
the 1990s. These works have played an important role in the maturation
of connoisseurship standards. For instance, copies of the Northern Song
painting Wind in the Stream and A Secluded Scene by
the Yuan artist Lin Zihuan have emerged, and the debate on the authenticity
of Zhang Xian's Ten Odes rages on. Another work from Puyi's
collection by the Song calligrapher Zhou Yue resurfaced in Taiwan. Li
Ao, Chen Zhaoji, and Wang Yumin have jointly authored Research on
the Ink Traces of Zhou Yue (Taiwan Laurel Book Company Limited),
a reference worth consulting.
